Discusion Essay Mario Toribio
Some people are born in a place where more than
one language is spoken. Places like Catalonia, Canada or Belgium have more than
one official language. Is this beneficial or not?
Being bilingual has good things. First, you can
speak more than one language, so you have more vocabulary and more ways to
express things in words. Also, if you go abroad, you will have less trouble to
communicate. For example, if you are born in Canada and go to France, you will
be able to understand French people better than a person who comes from Spain.
There are also bad things about being bilingual.
When you know two languages, you can confuse them and make mistakes when
talking or writing, as it happens in Catalonia with Catalan and Spanish. Moreover,
being bilingual produces bilingual people the effect of “having a word on the
tip of your tongue”, because the brain relates the concept with two different
words.
Personally, I think being bilingual is
beneficious. Being able to speak more than one language opens your mind to new
languages and makes you language richer. As a bilingual person, I’ve had really
good experiences learning new languages and my two mother languages have helped
me a lot in different places and situations in my life.
